Fighting it Off

The morning air is getting crisp, and the nights are getting shorter.  Even sunny California is starting to feel like Fall!

In my last post, we went over how to prevent catching a cold, but what to do if you are already feeling that itchy, scratchy feeling in your throat?

Pears for Tonifying Lung Yin

Heat and dryness trapped in the Lungs can easily cause coughs and other Lung disorders.
Pears are a great Lung Yin tonifying food. For a weak, dry, lingering cough that hangs around, especially if the symptoms get worse at night, the Lung Yin needs supporting.

Here’s a good recipe:
1. Wash and core a pear, I prefer Asian pears, but any variety works. (Cup the pear at the top, core the middle)
2. Bring water to a boil in a large pot
3. Place pear in a ceramic bowl with a little water, place in pot
4. Fill middle of cored pear with organic honey, place top of pear back on
5. Cover the bowl and pot and let boil then steam/simmer for about 15-20 mins, or until pear is soft
6. Eat the pear while warm, or mash up and drink as tea.

Pomegranates for Respiratory Symptoms

From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective the bright red color of pomegranates is associated with the heart and blood, thereby having positive, strengthening effects on both.

The pomegranate is rich in vitamins C and K, but it also contains some of most of the B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6), vitamin E, as well as folate.

In terms of minerals, the pomegranate is very rich in potassium, with 1 cup of arils yielding over 400mg of potassium. It also contains some copper, magnesium, manganese, calcium, iron, zinc and phosphorus.

Pomegranates have been shown to be helpful for respiratory issues, as well as help with boosting your immunity.

You can strain the seeds and drink it as juice.  You can also fill a mason jar with seeds, then fill it with organic honey (just enough to cover the seeds) and let soak for a few days in the fridge.  Then add a teaspoon of the mixture into a cup of hot water as tea.

Drink this juice or tea at the first sign of a dry cough or wheezing.

Dao Tea

Another great option is taking the “Cold and Allergy” tea from Dao Labs. This tea is  based off the classic formula Yu Ping Feng San (“Jade Windscreen”). The formula is composed of three powerful herbs and combined with a natural pear-ginger flavor combination. This formula is still used widely across Asia during cold and pollen seasons, with research providing insight into how and why it works.

Cold and Allergy is best when taken:

    • Daily during cold and pollen seasons
    • Before travelling
    • When your family or colleagues are sick
    • For when you need an immunity boost

Consider this formula an ancient, natural alternative to modern day vitamin supplement powders that are typically added to water. Use this incredible combination of three herbs to protect your body when you need it most during cold & pollen seasons or before your upcoming travel plans.

Simply add powder to water, stir and enjoy. All formulas come in individual packets making it easy for you to enjoy at home or on-the-go.

Chinese Herbal decoctions and formulas are infamous for smelling and tasting…well, bad.  But Dao Labs has developed a line of individual packaged teas with power and effectiveness of classic Chinese formulas without the strong, earthy smell and taste.  Dao Labs  uses only sustainably-sourced herbs and focus on the simplicity of healing from nature. Its a great preventative method, but can also be taken when you already start to feel the starts of a cold.
